The Winter Project Begins again

Now that's it's practically night by the time I get home, the only time I can shoot is on the weekends, which means I'll be doing my winter project again. I liked how it turned into a 3-image photo each week, so I think I'll go with that until I think of something else I'd like to try... hope you enjoyed this year's Daylight photos!

Here's the new 'Pacific Standard' winter site...

239 : Bare twigs shilouette

I couldn't get a nice colorful shot like I had hoped for the finale... the only direct light was during the sunset hours facing west. Just liked to look of the tiny twigs against the light sky. I'll probably get more like this when I get the black and white winter up and going!

238 : Raindrops on yellow lily bloom

Another wet day here, but bright enough to get a nice shot out front. It's nice that the project is almost done, but there are still some flower still holding out with some color. Let's hope it's bright enough at some point tomorrow for a colorful finale photo!

237 : Raindrops on rose leaf

Managed to get this shot after it had rained a bit and the sun was setting. Just love how yellow the sunshine comes in just before it sets. Love the depth of the leaves in the distance.

236 : Orange leaf on blue

Decided to head back out to the dogwood tree and see if I could get some more leaf shots. Found this orange one in the sunlight and got a handful of it. Just love the bright color of it, and the texture against the light blue backdrop. Love the highlights and shadows that show the topography of the leaf.

235 : The last rose petal

There's not much left of the roses in the back yard, but it's the only place that gets any sun by the time I get home nowadays. Just liked the image of the lone petal hanging on, with the warm low sun giving it a nice yellow glow.

234 : Green leaf with red highlights

Got home a bit late and didn't get a chance tonight to shoot with the weather being as poor as it was, so decided to use another one of the leaf shots from yesterday. Even as green as this leaf was, there's a lot of red to be found in it... pretty neat.

Sunday, October 25, 2009

233 : Red dogwood leaf on sky

The leaves from the dogwood tree out front are turning red now, which make for some great photo options on a clear day. Love all the warm colors against the pale blue sky. Love how the shadows from the stick above break up the color a bit.

Saturday, October 24, 2009

232 : Orange bloom on purple stem

Somehow this plant managed to bloom another orange flower... not sure why these plants insist on producing new blooms, but I'm glad they are! Love the colors in this one... the vibrant orange against the cool green and purple of the stem.

231 : Back of sunflower

Not much sun again today, but decided to try and use the flash on this one. Actually really helps bring out the color without washing it out... might have to try it some more on these dreary days.

230 : Withered sunflower leaves

Not much sun, so these silhouettes seemed to work with their interesting shape. Just the leaves hanging from one of the sunflower stalks... only the little ones have any color to them these days.

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

229 : Sunflower on painterly greens

Just really love the colors on this one... feel fortunate to even have colors like this to shoot this far into fall. Maybe next year I'll try and plant a late batch of sunflowers like I did this year... they're the only ones still alive since that windstorm only blew over the bigger ones.

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

228 : Black sunflower bud

Really like how this one turned out. Just a bud against a plain backdrop, but love the texture in the yellow petals, and the depth of the black leaves surrounding them.

Monday, October 19, 2009

227 : Dark-edged leaf

Didn't have much sun to work with, but thought the leaf looked pretty interesting with the dark border around it, and a nice yellow green backdrop. Like the purple stalk of the plant for some color.

Sunday, October 18, 2009

226 : Colorful sunflower leaf

The sunflower leaves take on some great colors in the fall... and love the irregular shape of the leaf with the colorful backdrop. And as always, love the texture on the leaf.

Saturday, October 17, 2009

225 : Sunflower bloom on blue

Managed to get some blue sky out by the sunflowers. Just liked how this flower looked against the blue sky, mixed in with other leaning flowers.

Friday, October 16, 2009

224 : Rose with flash

Had to use the flash just to get a decent shot with all the clouds. Was pretty pleased with how the colors turned out on this one... picked this one especially because I think the green of the stem adds a nice touch of color to the warm colors of the rose.

Thursday, October 15, 2009

223 : Squirrel against fall colors

The squirrels are out again... Jill said she saw the mother out with three of her kids, but I only saw her when I went back to shoot. Just love the fall colors in the backdrop. .

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

222 : Raindrops on rose

Rained a bit out earlier, but at least the sun came back out so I could get a decent shot. There was a huge rainbow too, but sadly I didn't have my camera with me! Just like the little raindrops on the petals, and how the shadows helps bring out the light colors of the rose.

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

221 : Grasshopper

Saw this little guy on one of the branches out in the side yard. Just liked the greens and browns in the shot... perfect for a cloudy day.

220 : Backlit sunflower

Couldn't post last night due to some blogspot maintenance, so here is yesterday's photo. Was lucky enough to have some sun by the time I got home, and have it directly behind this sunflower. Love the texture of the petals, and how the colors come through from the sun.

Apologies

Went out of town for a few days, and forgot to mention it beforehand! I didn't manage to get any new photos for the site on my trip, so I posted some old photos from different days that didn't quite make the cut that paticular day... enjoy!

219 : Sunflower on chain link backdrop

Really love the color and texture of this sunflower's petals, and think the chain link fence made for an interesting backdrop with the brown grass behind it.

218 : Sunflower quarter and leaf

Really liked how the sun was hitting this one, bringing out the colors on the tips. Think the green leaf in the background helped add a bit of color and shape.

217 : Reds and greens

Just really liked the bright colors in this one... the depth of the different blooms adds a bit to it as well.

Thursday, October 8, 2009

216 : Sunflower corner on blue

Just love the orange against the crisp blue sky... so glad to even be able to get this shot in October.

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

215 : Rose on green

It's too bad the only flowers left in the sun by the time I get home now are the sunflowers and the roses, but at least they provide great color still. Sometimes it seems the red roses turn out a little 'hot' when in the direct sun, but this one turned out just right... love the red and greens.

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

214 : Half of dried sunflower

I'm really fortunate to have so much sunlight to work with this week... nothing but clear skies all week it seems. The sunflowers still have plenty of color in them, and some great texture in their petals now that they've got a bit of a curl and twist in them. Love the bright colors against the earthy green backdrop.

Monday, October 5, 2009

213 : Green and speckled leaf

Really love how the colors turned out on this one. Just noticed this bright green leaf next to this bright orange one on the dogwood tree, and thought it made for a great shot with the evening sun on it. Just love the colors on the leaves this time of year.

Sunday, October 4, 2009

212 : Rain drops on leaf

Not sure how the drops seem to cling to this leaf even when it's at and angle, but sure makes for an interesting shot! That little purple flower is still hanging out below... adds a nice bit of color to all the green and yellow texture.

Saturday, October 3, 2009

211 : Bloom on maple leaf

The maple tree is already shedding its orange leaves into the yard, and yet there are still flowers out front blooming. Thought the brownish/orange of the leaf made for a nice contrast to the bright green of the plant... especially with a little red and yellow bloom popping up.

Friday, October 2, 2009

210 : Crispy sunflower in sun

Managed to find some sun out in the side yard with the sunflowers... just love the bright orange against the warm blue backdrop.

Thursday, October 1, 2009

209 : Rosebud and rose

Not much choice when it's gray out beside going out back and hope there's enough sun back there to get a decent shot. Fortunately there's still plenty of roses back there, probably due to all the rain we've gotten! Just love the texture of the pale rose on the right, with the contrast of the bright bud.

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

208 : Rosebud on rose

It's getting impossible to shoot out front once I get home due to the shadows... good thing there are still roses sprouting out back! Just loved the bud against the fully bloomed rose, against the pale house.

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

207 : Day lily

Found a few more day lilies out front... just overcast enough to give enough light, but keep the shadows to a minimum. Just love the color against the dark backdrop.

Monday, September 28, 2009

206 : Purple flower in big leaf

Super gray and overcast when I got home... I took a handful of shots, but nothing turned out really well, so I thought I'd post a photo from last weekend. Somehow this purple flower found its way into the big leafed plant... loved the purple against the green and yellow of the big leaf.

Sunday, September 27, 2009

205 : Sunflower on yellow

Seems like the bigger sunflowers that fell over are on their way out, so there's a bunch of huge yellow leaves dangling down out there... even though the two yellows are pretty similar, I think the leaf still makes for an interesting backdrop.

Saturday, September 26, 2009

204 : Holed lucifer stalk

Just love all the colors and textures and shapes these laves have to offer this time of year... I could shoot these each day for weeks and I don't think I'd get tired of them.

Friday, September 25, 2009

203 : Rosebud

Can't believe that flowers are still budding this time of year, but love how the red stood out against the warm green and blue. Love the depth on the stem, and that the leaves in the back are from the same plant.

Thursday, September 24, 2009

202 : Purple burst flower on green

Since there's not many flowers left out front (especially with sun by the time I get home) that I thought I'd get another one of this flower. Love how the backdrop turned out with the soft diagonal lines.

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

201 : Purple burst flower and bud

The nice thing about being able to shoot at lunchtime is that the sun is up high, as opposed to when I get home at 5:30 and flowers are already in shadows. Just love how all the colors turned out on this one... really vibrant greens and purples. Think it's interesting that there are still some flowers budding... even in late September.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

200 : Dim bloom on neons

Went out to shoot the sunflowers, but the most colorful part of the garden were some of the sunflower's leaves... a few have turned a bright orange and made for a great backdrop with the sun on it... love the orange hue around the flower.

Monday, September 21, 2009

199 : The last day lily

This guy looks to be the last of the day lilies in our front yard, and fortunately it had a spec of sun on it. Like how all the colors turned out, from the yellow of the bloom and the shriveled bud, to the cool greens of the stalks and the blue of the concrete sidewalk.

Sunday, September 20, 2009

198 : Bell flower on yellow and green

Not really sure why I haven't gotten any photos of these magenta bell flowers until now... guess something else always caught my eye. Just loved the bright magenta against the colorful backdrop of the aging lucifer stalks.

Saturday, September 19, 2009

197 : Rain drops on lucifer leaf

The nice thing about getting some fall rain is that oftentimes the sun comes out shortly after and makes for some interesting photos. Just love the rain drops beaded on the dying leaf, and the greens, browns and yellows of the lucifer stalks in the background.

Friday, September 18, 2009

196 : Side of rose

Nice and sunny out back on the roses when I got home. Really loved the simple colors in this shot, and the depth it shows. A nice simple shot.

Thursday, September 17, 2009

195 : Big leaf with bloom

I haven't taken a shot of this leaf in a while... just liked it with a little hint of color in the corner... thought it went nice with the bright green leaf. Like the shadow from the flower reflected on the leaf.

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

194 : Little sunflower on green

Not sure which variety of sunflower this is, but really like the orange color of the petals... especially against the green of the taller sunflowers. Good to see that the smaller ones are still standing strong after that crazy wind storm we had.

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

193 : Purple flower and yellow day lily

Really love how the colors turned out on this one. Love the glistening of the day lily petals too. Even the shadowed portion of the purple flower has a nice rich color to it.

Monday, September 14, 2009

192 : Tangerine rose

Somehow the flowers in the backyard just keep on blooming. Seemed like they had died out a few weeks back, but maybe the cooler weather and some rain has brought them back to bloom. Just really love how the colors on this shot turned out, from the vibrant and warm orange and yellow to all the dark greens of the rose plant.

Sunday, September 13, 2009

191 : Grasshopper on day lily

This may be the biggest grasshopper I've ever seen! Between his antennae and his legs it stretched across the whole bloom. Love that the color of the grasshopper matches the backdrop, and the yellow sure helps separate the two.

Saturday, September 12, 2009

190 : Light peach rose

I'm not sure if I've taken any photos of the roses that made it up on this site, so thought I'd get one. Just love the bleached color of the rose... perfect for a hot day like today! Love the texture of the petals and they curl down.
