208 : Rosebud on rose

It's getting impossible to shoot out front once I get home due to the shadows... good thing there are still roses sprouting out back! Just loved the bud against the fully bloomed rose, against the pale house.

207 : Day lily

Found a few more day lilies out front... just overcast enough to give enough light, but keep the shadows to a minimum. Just love the color against the dark backdrop.

206 : Purple flower in big leaf

Super gray and overcast when I got home... I took a handful of shots, but nothing turned out really well, so I thought I'd post a photo from last weekend. Somehow this purple flower found its way into the big leafed plant... loved the purple against the green and yellow of the big leaf.

205 : Sunflower on yellow

Seems like the bigger sunflowers that fell over are on their way out, so there's a bunch of huge yellow leaves dangling down out there... even though the two yellows are pretty similar, I think the leaf still makes for an interesting backdrop.

204 : Holed lucifer stalk

Just love all the colors and textures and shapes these laves have to offer this time of year... I could shoot these each day for weeks and I don't think I'd get tired of them.

203 : Rosebud

Can't believe that flowers are still budding this time of year, but love how the red stood out against the warm green and blue. Love the depth on the stem, and that the leaves in the back are from the same plant.

202 : Purple burst flower on green

Since there's not many flowers left out front (especially with sun by the time I get home) that I thought I'd get another one of this flower. Love how the backdrop turned out with the soft diagonal lines.

201 : Purple burst flower and bud

The nice thing about being able to shoot at lunchtime is that the sun is up high, as opposed to when I get home at 5:30 and flowers are already in shadows. Just love how all the colors turned out on this one... really vibrant greens and purples. Think it's interesting that there are still some flowers budding... even in late September.

200 : Dim bloom on neons

Went out to shoot the sunflowers, but the most colorful part of the garden were some of the sunflower's leaves... a few have turned a bright orange and made for a great backdrop with the sun on it... love the orange hue around the flower.

199 : The last day lily

This guy looks to be the last of the day lilies in our front yard, and fortunately it had a spec of sun on it. Like how all the colors turned out, from the yellow of the bloom and the shriveled bud, to the cool greens of the stalks and the blue of the concrete sidewalk.

198 : Bell flower on yellow and green

Not really sure why I haven't gotten any photos of these magenta bell flowers until now... guess something else always caught my eye. Just loved the bright magenta against the colorful backdrop of the aging lucifer stalks.

197 : Rain drops on lucifer leaf

The nice thing about getting some fall rain is that oftentimes the sun comes out shortly after and makes for some interesting photos. Just love the rain drops beaded on the dying leaf, and the greens, browns and yellows of the lucifer stalks in the background.

196 : Side of rose

Nice and sunny out back on the roses when I got home. Really loved the simple colors in this shot, and the depth it shows. A nice simple shot.

195 : Big leaf with bloom

I haven't taken a shot of this leaf in a while... just liked it with a little hint of color in the corner... thought it went nice with the bright green leaf. Like the shadow from the flower reflected on the leaf.

194 : Little sunflower on green

Not sure which variety of sunflower this is, but really like the orange color of the petals... especially against the green of the taller sunflowers. Good to see that the smaller ones are still standing strong after that crazy wind storm we had.

193 : Purple flower and yellow day lily

Really love how the colors turned out on this one. Love the glistening of the day lily petals too. Even the shadowed portion of the purple flower has a nice rich color to it.

192 : Tangerine rose

Somehow the flowers in the backyard just keep on blooming. Seemed like they had died out a few weeks back, but maybe the cooler weather and some rain has brought them back to bloom. Just really love how the colors on this shot turned out, from the vibrant and warm orange and yellow to all the dark greens of the rose plant.

191 : Grasshopper on day lily

This may be the biggest grasshopper I've ever seen! Between his antennae and his legs it stretched across the whole bloom. Love that the color of the grasshopper matches the backdrop, and the yellow sure helps separate the two.

190 : Light peach rose

I'm not sure if I've taken any photos of the roses that made it up on this site, so thought I'd get one. Just love the bleached color of the rose... perfect for a hot day like today! Love the texture of the petals and they curl down.

189: Pink flower on yellow and blue

Just thought this flower looked nice against the yellow backdrop. Like the curve of the stem and the rigidness of all the petals. Almost think the background is more interesting that the foreground on this one.

188 : Sunflower facing down

A handful of the sunflowers seem to be in this position now... with their face looking down after that crazy windy storm we had last weekend. Certainly makes for a bit of a different shot than I'm used to, but I suppose that's a good thing... like the detail on the black seeds against the pale yellow petals.

187 : Sunflower quarter and leaf

Pretty gray by the time I got home, so thought I'd head out to the sunflowers. Didn't get any colorful shots, but thought this one turned out pretty interesting nonetheless. Too bad it couldn't have been a bit brighter outside... looks like it will be this weekend though!

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

186 : Yellow day lily on blue

Saw this day lily and thought it'd make for a neat shot against the blue grass. Like how the dried up bud in the back adds a little darker shade of yellow. Sure can tell that the sun is going down earlier each day... feels like I have less and less time to shoot each week!

Monday, September 7, 2009

185 : Squirrel on green

Was out reading again when the squirrel came begging for food. It was that time in the evening when the neighbors get light in their backyard, which worked as a perfect bright green backdrop. Love all the hairs visible against the backdrop (on the elbows and its whiskers.)

Sunday, September 6, 2009

184 : Half-lit sunflower

Found a break in the weather to go out and shoot the sunflowers, but to my horror a bunch of them had toppled over due to the crazy wind we've been having! I stood up as many as I could, but looks like some of the taller ones aren't going to make it. I did find this little orange one at around waist level and got a handful of pictures of it against the green of the rest of the sunflower.

183 : Squirrel with mouth half open

Seems like now that fall is near, the squirrels seem to be coming up for walnuts more and more. I'm glad this one came up today because it was so gloomy and gray outside that I hadn't gotten pictures of anything else. Just love how strong the colors turned out on it... especially that warm orange.

Friday, September 4, 2009

182 : Black rosebud

Pretty gray out by the time I went out to shoot, so I stuck to the back yard. Came across what looked like a black rosebud (although I assume it was a dark red and just dried up to look like black.) Either way, it was a neat look, especially coupled with this interesting leaf.

Thursday, September 3, 2009

181 : Two purple blooms

Didn't have much time to get a shot, so went out front to get a few quick shots. Really like the purple blooms against the greens of the day lily stems, and managed to get a well-lit shot of them.

180 : One and a half daisies

Towards the end of their lifespan, the petals on the daisies always get some interesting traits... the petals turn a bit brown and crispy, little holes start forming on the petals, just little things I think can make them a little more visually interesting. Love the daisy on the left with holes in the petals and some decaying our the edges... neat textures.

179 : Warm petals against blue

Really loved how the colors turned out in this one... from the dark maroon where the shade from one petal hits the next, to the dirty yellow on the tips of the petals, to the hint of green. Even the blue sky turned out pretty crisp. Love the texture on the lower petals.
